In this year-long series of date paintings the air quality readings of Helsinki and Seoul are translated into colour, forming a landscape based on air pollution.

The colour of each painting corresponds to the internationally most used air quality index, the USAQI, which illustrates the air quality both in numbers, ranging from 1 (perfect) to 500 (hazardous) and in corresponding colours, ranging from green through, yellow, orange, red, violet to burgundy.

Across the paintings, tying the cities together, we place the corresponding date. In Korea, the date is written YY/MM/DD and in Finland DD/MM/YY. In our paintings we combine these two so that the day is written out in the middle: YY/MM/D-D/MM/YY.

Through this mirroring effect we are forcing an easily unnoticed chain of cause and effect between the environmental wellbeing of some areas and the decay of others. On the other hand, in being a reinterpretation of On Kawara´s work, by painting we want to give material form – paint and colour – not only to the abstract air quality readings but also give a concrete form to our own status of living between two worlds. Not ever really being here nor there.

이번 프로젝트의 첫번째 작업인 SEL2020HEL은 2020년 366일동안 하루도 빠짐없이 하루에 2점의 회화를 만들어내는 일일 회화 시리즈이다. 매일마다 서울과 헬싱키의 공기질의 평균값을 확인하고 그 날의 데이터를 색으로 전환하여 공기오염도를 단색화/개념미술로 표현한다.

각각의 회화에서 쓰이는 단색들은 국제적으로 통용되는 대기질 지수(Air Quality Index), 특히 많이 상용되는 USAQI의 데이터에 따라 만들어진다. 대기질 지수 계산에서 보이는 오염 농도의 수치는 숫자 1(양호)에서 500(위험)까지 있고 녹색에서 노란색, 주황색, 빨간색, 자주색 그리고 갈색까지의 색의 변화를 통해 공기의 오염도를 쉽게 확인할 수 있다.

짝을 이루는 회화 두 점 중간엔 그 날의 날짜가 이어서 그려지며 서울과 헬싱키를 같이 묶는 역할을 한다. 한국에선 몇년.몇월.몇일의 순서로 날짜가 표시되지만 핀란드에선 몇일.몇월.몇년 식으로 날짜가 정반대로 표시된다. 두 개의 캔버스를 붙여 중간에 날짜를 놓아서, 년.월.일-일.월.년의 방식으로 씀으로서 두 장소의 시간이 따로는 존재할 수 없게 만들었다.

이렇게 거울처럼 비치는 것처럼 정반대로 놓인 날짜 형태를 통해 어떤 지역의 환경적 웰빙이 다른 한 쪽의 환경 붕괴과 연결되어 있다는 너무나도 극명한 사실을 적나라하게 들이밀 수 있다. 또 다른 한편으로 이 작업은 온 가와라의 <오늘 연작>을 재해석하는 데 있다. 추상적으로 보일 수 있는 대기질 지수에 따른 색을 눈으로 만질 수 있는 물감과 캔버스라는 물질적 형태로 바꾸어 두 세계 사이에 존재하는 우리의 ‘국제적인’ 상태에 좀 더 실질적인 형태를 부여한다. 여기에도 저기에도 결국 있지 않은 존재로서 말이다.
