For Westerners, East easily translates to the Far East. From a Korean perspective, however, the USA (read: the West) is situated in the East. The Finnish title of the work, Ikkuna Itään, is borrowed from a Chinese state run (propaganda) program on Finnish radio, promoting Chinese culture.

This work originates in our own confusion with how to place ourselves in the world. We are neither Korean nor do we feel comfortable with the label of West - which has become almost synonymous with the USA.
The inevitable inter-cultural influencing (sometimes called cultural appropriation or cultural toadyism) of the globalised world doesn’t seem to fit with the nationalistic discourses that are built around them.

It is within this confusing landscape, where overreaching terms like East and West feel increasingly inaccurate descriptions that we make use of the traditional Korean window frame, its design, materials and patterns while turning them into an American flag.

한국 전통 창호로 만들어진 이 작품은 미국 성조기를 묘사한다. 이 작품의 제목은 원래 ‘동쪽을 향한 창문’이라는 뜻의 핀란드어 ‘Ikkuna Itään (이꾸나 이딴)’에서 가져온 것으로서, 10여년전 쯤 핀란드 라디오 방송국에서 중국 문화원의 후원으로 꾸준히 방송된 ‘중국 문화 배우기’ 캠페인의 동일한 제목 'Ikkuna Itään (Window to the East)’ 에서 영감을 받아 작품을 만들게 되었다. 여기서 특히 ‘East’ 가 중국과 동일시되어 선전되는 것에 놀라움을 감치 못했으며, 지리적 방향성이 곧 특정한, 단 하나의 문화정체성으로 바로 치환되는 것에 주목한다.

또한 이 작품은 근래 한국의 정치적 스캔들과 세대간의 극명한 대립 속에서 가장 많이 나타난 성조기를 토대로 하였다. 태극기와 성조기를 흔들며 분노하는 부모세대의 모습에서, 우리는 미국에 대한 무한한 신뢰를 바탕으로 반북이념과 경제성장을 이루어낸 과거와 현재를 볼 수 있다. 그 뿌리 속에서 튼튼하게 자란 독특하게 해석된 ‘서양의 미’를 바탕으로 한 문화경제는 한국인이 일하고 소비하는 삶의 큰 부분이 되었다. 지리학적으로 서구의 나라들이 아시아를 일컬을때 EAST 라고 지칭하지만 우리의 동쪽엔 미국이 자리잡고 있는 것은 재미있는 사실이다.
