"Without continuous development a city lags behind other cities. Relapsed old urban areas impede overall urban development. That is why all cities must be born again, through urban restoration projects." - So starts one of the many promotional videos at show in the three-story museum dedicated to promote the development of the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ).
IFEZ-Songdo is being built on an artificial island on top of what used to be a mud field, located just outside the South Korean capital. It is an ambitious government-run project of global scale designed to encourage foreign investment, being promoted as “a self-contained living and business district.”
Our aim is to juxtapose IFEZ’s official imagery with our documentation of the areas day-to-day life. In this video-work we study how the promises of ‘deregulation’ and ‘incentive’ take form, contrasting a perfectly designed city with its reality.
