This site-specific installation covers every centimetre of the gallery space with behavioural instructions that we have documented in various public museums. Written in a very passive aggressive tone, the vinyl lettering turns the gallery into an infantilising lecture on how to properly and safely view the exhibition.

The first iteration of this work took place at Combine Works, a small gallery that is dominated by a big window with a stunning view of an old hanok-village in central Seoul. Instead of trying to compete (with artworks) with the view we instead covered the windows with a coloured film, filling the space with a soft pink hue.

Through its belittling connotations of good, correct, innocent, and feminine we exploit the pink colour to enforce the oppressive undertone of the written instructions. On the other hand, it only takes a couple of minutes for the eyes calibrate to the colour and the brain to effectively eliminate the pink, making the walls appear white, the lettering grey and the outside world weirdly green. The ease and near instantaneity of this acclimatisation expands the work from a commentary on the infantilising and authoritative environment to a meditation on the production of normal.

이 가변크기의 설치 작업은 갤러리 전시 공간의 구석구석을 국내 국공립미술관에서 수집한 관람객 행동 요령으로 가득 채운다. 레터링 시트지에 적힌 지극히 수동공격적인 어투의 문장들은 전시를 올바르고 안전하게 관람하는 방법을 어린아이를 타이르듯 가르치는, 유아화된 훈계의 공간으로 갤러리를 탈바꿈시킨다.

이 작업의 첫 번째 시도는 서울 북촌 중심에 자리한 작은 갤러리인 컴바인웍스에서 이루어졌다. 이 공간은 무엇보다도 북촌 한옥마을을 내려다보는 커다란 창이 관람객의 시선을 압도하는 곳이다. 우리는 작가로서 작품으로 창밖의 풍경과 경쟁하기보다, 창 전체를 컬러 필름으로 덮어 전시 공간을 부드러운 분홍빛으로 물들이는 방식을 택했다.

공공사회에서 핑크라는 색이 내포하는 착함, 올바름, 순수함, 여성스러움과 같은 다소 경시적인 함의를 작업의 재료로 활용함으로써, 미술관의 행동 지침이 은연중에 풍기는 강압적인 분위기를 더욱 부각시킨다. 하지만 동시에 관람객의 눈은 이 공간에 들어온 지 불과 몇 분 만에 분홍빛에 적응하고, 색을 인지하는 뇌는 핑크를 사실상 지워버린다. 그 결과 벽은 다시 흰색으로, 글자는 회색으로, 그리고 창밖의 풍경은 너무나 자연스럽게 다가오지만, 갤러리 밖을 나서는 순간 모든 것이 기묘하게 초록빛을 띠는 것처럼 보이기 시작한다. 이처럼 거의 즉각적으로 이루어지는 적응의 과정은 이 작업을 단순히 유아화되고 권위적인 환경에 대한 논평에 머무르게 하지 않는다. 오히려 우리가 무엇을 '정상'으로 받아들이게 되는지, 그리고 그 정상성이 어떻게 만들어지는지를 사유하는 작업으로 확장시킨다.
