Built in the early 1960´s, Mapo Apartment (Mapo district, Seoul) were in the forefront of starting the Korean housing revolution. In hindsight the importance of these Apartment buildings is absolute: Today around 60% of Seoul´s housing is of this kind. Very telling of Korean city-landscape is that such an important landmark has since long been torn down – and replaced.

In this video work we try to visualize this lack of historical references. It is a “documentation” of a melancholic repetitive cycle that leaves no traces. The video, still as a photograph, builds, erases and rebuilds a landscape in an endless loop.

1960년대 초에 지어진 서울시 마포구에 위치한 마포아파트는 한국 주거환경의 혁명을 암시하는 최초의 단지 아파트였습니다. 돌이켜보면 이러한 아파트 건물이 갖는 상징성은 절대적인데 그 이유는 바로 오늘날 서울시의 주택 중 거의 60%가 아파트이기 때문입니다. 한국의 도시풍경에 대한 진실은 바로 이렇게 역사적으로 중요한 지형지물이 이미 허물어지고 다른 건물들로 바뀌어 버린지 오래되었다는 사실입니다.이 영상작업에서 우리는 이러한 역사를 보여줄 수 있는 대상의 부재를 시각적으로 표현해보았습니다. 영상에서 보여지는 것은 아무런 흔적도 남기지 않고 허무하게 계속 돌고도는 현상을 ‘기록’한 것입니다. 사진처럼 정지된 영상 속에서 풍경은 끝없는 순환 속에서 만들어졌다가 지워지며 다시 재건축됩니다.
