7 Hours of Future

The time difference between our home cities is seven hours. These seven hours seem to separate not only two cities, but two worlds. Helsinki, where we now live, is a city unfamiliar with the concepts of air pollution and overpopulation. Seoul, where our future is set, is an overcrowded megalopolis shrouded in toxic smog most of the year.

On a personal level, this project is about trying to find reconciliation. For us, the title 7 hours of Future refers not only to a time difference, but also to geographical distance and a sense of being trapped between our present, past and future; trying to confront a future we do not want, but cannot avoid.

We use our particular circumstances to draw parallels between the realities of our two home countries, and by proxy to the world at large. In this sense, the title refers to the idea of an interconnected world, bound by cause and effect. Through our juxtapositions of Seoul and Helsinki, we try to portray not only how these countries exist in interdependence, but also how the consequences of local human economical activity reverberate globally.

The project is made up of a series of comparative works consisting of reinterpreted landscapes that portray actual, possible and alternating social and ecological realities of Korea and Finland. 7 hours of Future is a visual journey into the modern, man-built world. It is a naked portrayal of our helpless existence subdued to the sublime, devastating industrialization of our world. While reflecting on the despair and estrangement from our own environment caused by changes to that same environment, we find it equally important to admit our sympathy towards β€” and dependency on β€” the breathtaking economical achievements and comforts that cause the despair in the first place. Ultimately, what we are trying to do is to understand and elaborate an aesthetics of progress.
